dplThe German Postcode Lottery (Deutsche Postcode Lotterie) allocates 30 per cent of the ticket price to charitable causes that focus on education, social cohesion, human rights, and animal and environmental protection in the winners' federal state. A list of the first projects can be found on its website www.postcode-lotterie.de/projekte

The principle is simple: The player's postcode consists of the numbers that identify the city and two letters that identify the street. There is also a unique three-digit ticket number which enables players to take part in the drawing and secure their daily chances of winning. As in other countries, the German Postcode Lottery is a subscription lottery. Players take part until they cancel their subscription.

The postcode is the basis of the lottery number. A lottery ticket costs € 12,50 per ticket per month.

In 2016 the ‘Deutsche Postcode Lotterie’ introduced a unique, new concept in Germany: a social lottery where participants and their neighbours can win together and support good causes in their neighbourhood. 30 percent of the money raised by the lottery will go to local and regional projects of social benefit across Germany – focussing on education, social cohesion, human rights, animal welfare and nature conservation.

An independent advisory committee lead by the former chairperson of the Bundestag (the lower house of parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany), Rita Süssmuth, will decide which projects receive support.

"I couldn’t think of a better way to use my popularity than to support charitable causes that help people. And being the ambassador of Deutsche Postcode Lotterie enables me to do just that. The combination of winning and giving - is there anything better than that? That’s why I’m very happy to join the postcode lottery family."

With 5 draws a month there are prizes to be won every single day of the week. As well as every Saturday a prize of €10,000, players also have a chance to win a share of the €500,000 ‘Postcode of the Month’ prize each month.

Annemiek Hoogenboom and Eva Struving are the Managing Directors of the German Postcode Lottery.

“Generating gifts for good causes that benefit people and the planet is written in the DNA of the Postcode Lottery. We created the first Postcode Lottery 27 years ago because we believe that gifting should go from strength to strength, just like a tree producing new apples each season. We believe that social organisations are indispensable in terms of supporting social change. We support projects that stimulate this in the long term. I’m both excited and proud that in Germany we will now be trying to build on our successes in the Netherlands, Great Britain and Sweden.”  - Annemiek Hoogenboom and Eva Struving, managing directors of the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie

The Deutsche Postcode Lotterie exists to raise funds for, and increase awareness of, charities and good causes across Germany. 30 percent of the money raised by the lottery will go to local and regional projects of social benefit across Germany – focussing on education, social cohesion, human rights, animal welfare and nature conservation.
