The BankGiro Lottery has been in existence since 1961 and is the oldest charity lottery in the Netherlands. Since September 2002, the BankGiro Lottery has been organized by Novamedia. This means that from that moment on all three of the charity lotteries in the Netherlands are operated under the same management.

In February 2011 the BankGiro Lottery donated 60 million euros to more than fifty cultural institutions. This is half of the total sum spent on lottery tickets in 2010 which amounted to 119 million euros. More than 900,000 people played the BankGiro Lottery in 2010.
Their lottery numbers are the same as their bank or giro account numbers. Between them they purchased a total of 1.1 million lottery tickets and won cash prizes of 1 million euros, 500,000 euros and other amounts.

The institutions supported by the lottery include museums such as the van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Cobra Museum for modern art, Hermitage Amsterdam (a branch of the famous Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg).
Organisations that work to restore and preserve windmills (De Hollandsche Molen), buildings that have architectural or historic value (Vereniging Hendrick de Keyser) and to promote culture in general (Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fonds) are also supported by the BankGiro Lottery.
