Lotteries

Lotteries have existed as a means of fundraising for over 500 years in Europe. In the North Americas they have been in existence for over 300 years. In 1566, Elizabeth I authorised a lottery to renovate England’s ports and Aqueducts. In France, Louis XIV had, as early as 1658, authorised a major public lottery to build the Paris General Hospital. And 16th century provincial lotteries in the Netherlands funded hospitals, soldiers’ pay and relief for the poor.
