Novamedia has a passion for the connecting and enriching power of reading, and is active in the book and publishing field. Novamedia owns the Netherlands’ largest bookstore Scheltema in Amsterdam and online bookshop BookSpot. It also has a 100% interest in publisher Uitgeefhuis Nieuw Amsterdam, which consists of the publishers Bas Lubberhuizen, Fontaine Uitgevers, Nieuw Amsterdam and Wereldbibliotheek. Novamedia has always been active in media. In the past, amongst others it was co-owner of Independent Media, which launched The Moscow Times and Cosmopolitan in Russia in the late nineties.

The BookSpot Literature Prize 2018 for the best Dutch-language literary book of the past year goes to De heilige Rita by Tommy Wieringa. The prize was awarded this year for the 32nd time on the TV programme RTL Late Night. In addition to an amount of €50,000, the author also received the sculpture that represents this prize.


Nieuw Amsterdam Publishers is a dynamic, independent publishing house consisting of Bas Lubberhuizen, Fontaine Uitgevers, Nieuw Amsterdam and Wereldbibliotheek. It is specialised in high-quality books and publishes fiction as well as non-fiction in the categories of literature, art, culture, science, society, lifestyle and current affairs, with a focus on the Dutch market.

BookSpot is an online bookshop, formerly known as eci. Eci was founded in 1967 as a book club, which purpose was to encourage reading in the Netherlands. It was restarted by Novamedia in 2014. BookSpot's mission is to encourage the reading of books, fuelled by the conviction that reading books makes people more empathic, creative and intelligent. As such, a population who reads, aids to make the world a better place. Since its relaunch, BookSpot has moved away from the traditional subscription model. Its approximately 70 book-loving employees have transformed BookSpot into an online bookshop, focussing on providing personalised book advice and inspiration, and where loyal customers are rewarded with a 20% discount.

Scheltema is an icon in Amsterdam: it was established in 1853 near Dam Square and the Rokin, and soon became one of the leading book stores in the capital. Scheltema later moved to Koningsplein, where it remained till 2014. With the take-over by Novamedia, Scheltema moved to a monumental building at the Rokin, and returned to its historical roots.
