As of July 2019, high-profile literary publishing house Podium will pursue its activities as part of Publishing House Nieuw Amsterdam, thereby reinforcing Nieuw Amsterdam’s literary character. From this strong platform, director Joost Nijsen, who founded Podium in 1997, expects to be able to offer his authors even better support and commercial opportunities.
Josja Zijlstra, director of Publishing House Nieuw Amsterdam, says, ‘We make this announcement with pride. Podium, with a wonderful combination of Dutch and international authors of both fiction and non-fiction, is a valuable addition to our current range. Over recent years, Nieuw Amsterdam has developed into a healthy publishing group with outstanding lists and a strong commercial department. From this firm basis our publishers can focus on providing optimal support for their authors, in the knowledge that they can rely on a professional back office.’
Joost Nijsen explains that Podium has stood on its own two feet for twenty-two years, developing many successful oeuvres and projects. 'The starting point has always been to offer our authors the ultimate service, from thinking along with them about their oeuvre to the choice of a cover, promotion and rights. We can only continue to provide that service in the current market by becoming part of a larger whole with a strong commercial team.'
Nijsen: 'Our explorations quickly led us to Nieuw Amsterdam as the ideal candidate. As a result of parent company Novamedia’s tenacity and its deep-rooted belief in the importance of reading, Nieuw Amsterdam has developed into one of the best publishing groups in the country. Witness the successes of big names such as Isabel Allende, Elena Ferrante, Yotam Ottolenghi and Hanya Yanagihara. I look forward to putting Podium even more firmly on the map in this successful, tried-and-tested environment.’
This autumn the Podium team will move into the offices of Publishing House Nieuw Amsterdam at Van Eeghenstraat 93 in Amsterdam.
