Scheltema is an icon in Amsterdam: it was established in 1853 near Dam Square and Rokin and later moved to Koningsplein, where it remained till 2014. With the take-over by Novamedia, the store moved to a monumental building at the Rokin, and returned to its historical roots.
Scheltema offers a wide range of new and second-hand books. With more than 3,200 square metres of floor space, it houses over 125,000 titles. By organizing hundreds of events a year, Scheltema strives to be one of Amsterdam’s main cultural centers.
Bringing children into contact with the pleasure of reading is one of the book store’s focal points. Also Scheltema is the first book store with a fully operational kitchen, surrounded by hundreds of cooking books. Famous chefs, such as Jamie Oliver, Yotam Ottolenghi and the Hemsley Sisters have paid a visit.
